We are a ranching family committed to agriculture that is ecologically and economically viable. Our values reflect our agricultural heritage - honesty and integrity, trust and respect. Most importantly our business is built on relationships in everything we do. We believe the way plants, animals and people relate in a healthy, sustainable environment is crucial to the health and wellness of the world we all share.
Our philosophy is to work with nature and so it is why our herds calve in May. It has reduced our infrastructure and equipment needs and most of all it has reduced our labor requirements, which allows us to manage other aspects of our business. By calving in balance with nature it has also helped us to balance the nutritional needs of our cattle with the seasonal resources our land provides. We believe that for ranching to remain competitive they needs to be in the bottom 20% of cost of production while developing markets so that they are in the top 20% for marketing. To achieve this we minimize our machinery and iron and rely heavily on "Solar Powered 4 wheel drive forage biodigesters", also known as our cows. Our ranch is entirely forage based operation and all our pastures are perennial with no annual cropping. We graze 400 registered red and black Angus cows along with a commercial herd of 180 cows and 500 yearlings. Our goal is to maximize the grazing period without the need for expensive supplements and high input management. Besides relying on solar energy and 4 legged rumen power, our goal is to also value about value adding to the products that our ranch produces. Our genetics are a partnership with Pinebank New Zealand to develop North America's foremost grass based Angus Genetics. Using the best line bred Angus from New Zealand we produce forage developed bulls that help to increase the efficiency of pasture based agriculture. Our bulls are un-pampered 100% forage developed and sold as 2 year olds. We do not show cattle, nor follow the ridiculous trends that have handicapped our industry into dependency upon fossil fuels. We produce cattle that do more with less.
Our focus is also on the beef that we produce. From the start we never wanted to sell an animal through an auction market. We wanted to be connected from our ranch gate to the consumer's plate. It hasn't been easy and the challenges were tall but the endeavor resulted in Heritage Angus Beef. Now we smile with pride that our beef is enjoyed from coast to coast across Canada and all the way to the finest dining in Switzerland. Finally our greatest asset is our wildlife, scenery and tranquility. For our family working with Nature and dealing with its influences is at the heart of every decision. Our ranch is home to more than just cattle... it is home to a countless variety of wildlife species and fauna that we are still discovering on a daily basis. Natures deserve the right to be here as much as we do. After having traveled to many countries and many continents, we have learned a lot from our experiences. Sometimes we must see what others do not have to appreciate what we have.
We believe that for us to continue to succeed and to be successful these are the strategies that we need to stay focused on - it has not always been easy and we have often heard, "You can't do this you can't do that; you need to own this and you need to own that" - however like Robert Frost taking the road less traveled has made all the difference. |
